24.04.2020 – Prof. Walther und Dr. Knyazeva have been appointed guest professors by the National University of Science and Technology (MISIS), Moscow, and in this context, the existing research activities will now be strengthened through further exchange in teaching.

05.03.2020 – On March 5th, 2020, the final round of the StudienAWARD by Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH took place. The WPT congratulates its student Felix Grabienski, who successfully participated with his bachelor thesis „Evaluation of the influence of a heat treatment on the deformation behavior of additively manufactured, nitrogen-containing tool steel X30CrMo7-2”.

15.11.2019 – As part of the German-Russian research project "Alloying-dependent microstructure influence on corrosion fatigue mechanisms of brazed AISI 304/NiCrSiB joints", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), the PhD student Milena Penyaz from the Chair of Materials Science of the MEPhI (Moscow) passed a scientific guest stay at the Department of Materials Test Engineering from October 15 to November 15, 2019.

A special thanks to Mr. Philipp Wittke for his dedication to steering committee and good luck for his industrial career from February 1, 2020, after successful finalization of his doctorate.

08.10.2019 – From October 7 to 10, 2019, the 4th ASTM Symposium on Structural Integrity of Additive Manufactured Materials & Parts took place at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center (Oxon Hill, MD, USA). Within the conference, Mr. Jochen Tenkamp, M.Sc., gave on behalf of Prof. Frank Walther an invited talk on “Mechanism-based fatigue assessment and statistical property modelling of additively manufactured alloys in the HCF and VHCF regime”.

 

2nd International Conference on Simulation for Additive Manufacturing

12.09.2019 – From September 11 to 13, 2019, the 2nd International Conference on Simulation for Additive Manufacturing took place at the University of Pavia (Pavia, Italy). Within the conference, Mr. Mustafa Awd, M.Sc., gave on behalf of Prof. Frank Walther an invited talk on “Simulation-based investigation of statistical fatigue strength of selective laser melted lightweight alloys”.

AiF Innovation Day 2019

13.05.2019 – On May 9, 2019, the Department of Materials Test Engineering, in cooperation with project partners, exhibited the successfully completed "PRISCA" project at the Innovation Day 2019 in Berlin. During guided tours of the VDI and the AiF the demonstrators and project results were presented by Daniel Hülsbusch and discussed with visitors. The Department of Materials Test Engineering would like to thank the AiF for the invitation to the Innovation Day.

 

Signing of a MOU between TU Dortmund University and MEPhI University in Moscow

08.04.2019 – On April 8, 2019, the TU Dortmund University and the National Research University for Nuclear Technology (MEPhI), Moscow, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which strengthens the cooperation of the Department of Materials Testing, TU Dortmund with the Chair of Materials Science, MEPhI. The agreement was signed during a visit of the Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ms. Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, with the participation of representatives of the Rectorate of the TU Dortmund.

04.04.2019 – On April 4, 2019, a roundtable with the participation of the Department of Materials Testing, TU Dortmund was held at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University on the topic "North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) - Russian Federation: Opportunities for the development of the German market using the example of North Rhine-Westphalia and development of bilateral cooperation between industry and science in the field of new materials".

18.02.2019 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering congratulates its external Ph.D. Mr. Tobias Schmack to the successful doctorate exam about topic "Development of a holistic method for determining the strain rate-dependent behavior of fiber-reinforced polymers".

 

Focused Ion Beam milling with Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM)

17.01.2019 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) presented the German Research Foundation (DFG) a convincing concept at the tendering of large scale equipment. Only ten university departments in Germany have a FIB-SEM in their laboratory equipment. The FIB-SEM with 3-dimensional backscatter electron diffraction system (3D-EBSD), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (3D-EDX) and integrated nanoindenter is technically up to date and unique in its existing equipment and device specification. The FIB-SEM offers the possibility to understand and explore the processes on a micro- and nano-scale basis and interpret the results in a far wider context than with conventional analysis methods. The FIB-SEM strengthens the profile “Production Engineering” of the technical university in Dortmund and gives in combination with the whole laboratory and analysis equipment the WPT an internationally exclusive feature.

 

X-ray diffraction system

30.11.2018 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) received funding within the Major Research Instrumentation Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a X-ray diffraction system by Bruker of D8 Discover type. This non-destructive analysis instrument enables to characterize residual stress states, textures and phase compositions of different materials and compounds.

 

Conference of DGM/DVM-AG „Materialermüdung”

29.10.2018 – From October 25 to 26, 2018, the Department of Materials Test Engineering hosted the meeting of the DGM/DVM-AG "Materialermüdung". The technical committee is mainly engaged in the characterization of material behavior under cyclic loading.
