Analysis of material crystal structure, material properties and material damage by using the impulse excitation technique

The Impulse Excitation Technique (IET) is used for the accurate measurement of the resonant frequency (fr) and internal friction (Q-1) of a vibrating specimen after it has been excited by a simple tap.
The IET is widely accepted as a reliable non-destructive technique to determine the dynamic elastic properties Young's Modulus, Shear Modulus and Poisson's ratio. Dedicated build furnaces in combination with advanced digital signal analysis enables the use of the non-destructive IET to measure continuously over a wide temperature range from -100°C up to 1750 °C. The slope of the measured fr and Q-1 curves gives information about phase transformations, dislocations, relaxation, brittle to ductile transition temperature.
The IET presented has shown to be useful to determine material deterioration due to thermal shock cycles, aging or fatigue tests.
Within this presentation an overview of the recent advances in material research by using the IET is given.
