Approval of the second funding period for DFG research unit 5250
- WPT news

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding research unit 5250, “Mechanism-based characterization and modeling of permanent and bioresorbable implants with tailored functionality based on innovative in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods,” for another four years (2026–2030). Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Frank Walther is the spokesperson and Prof. Dr. med. dent. Meike Stiesch is the co-spokesperson for DFG research unit 5250.

Scientists from TU Dortmund University, Hannover Medical School, Leibniz University Hannover, Laser Zentrum Hannover, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Reutlingen University, and the University of Rostock are collaborating in this interdisciplinary research network. The aim is the holistic development, characterization, and simulation-based design of patient-specific, additively manufactured implants for dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery, taking into account individual physiological conditions.
The synergistic interaction between experts from the fields of engineering and medical technology has already provided important impetus and achieved internationally visible results. With the approval of the second funding period, the findings to date will be further deepened and new scientific questions relating to bioresorbable implants made of magnesium alloys will be addressed.
Special thanks go to the German Research Foundation (DFG) for its funding under project number 449916462. We would also like to thank all project partners for their great commitment and excellent cooperation. We look forward to the coming years!
