Extrusion of aluminum chips

Development of an optimized recycling process and a non-destructive testing method for the quality inspection of extruded profiles made of aluminum chips

In addition to good thermal conductivity, machinability, and cold formability, aluminum has excellent specific strength properties for lightweight construction. Due to resource scarcity and the enormous amount of energy required for primary aluminum production, the importance of recycling processes for aluminum alloys is growing. In this ZIM project, an extrusion process for the recycling of aluminum chips is being optimized, increasing the welding quality between the chips and, thus, the service life of aluminum profiles. Finally, the development of a non-destructive testing method based on electrical resistance measurements is intended to detect critical points so that the quality condition of the profiles can be assessed in a time-efficient manner.
