As part of the plenary meeting for the second funding period of DFG Research Unit 5250, the project partners met to discuss current research results, new developments and the future joint research priorities.
The research unit is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with a total budget of €4.40 million and aims to develop patient-specific, additively manufactured and bioresorbable magnesium lattice structures for use as degradable implants. The focus lies on key questions along the entire process chain – from additive manufacturing and surface functionalization to degradation and corrosion fatigue behavior, biomechanical optimization, biological characterization and numerical simulation.
The research unit combines expertise from materials science and engineering, manufacturing technology, coating technology, biomechanics, medicine and simulation. The goal is to ensure the functionality of biodegradable implants during bone regeneration while simultaneously developing new approaches for patient-specific implant solutions.
The plenary meeting provided the participants with the opportunity for intensive interdisciplinary exchange and coordination of the upcoming research activities within the second funding period.
